Brooke Hair is an architect based in Los Angeles, where she leads a practice focused on the diverse richness of California’s domestic life. Before opening her studio, she was an Associate at Johnston Marklee, an Architect at IT House / Taalman Architecture, and a Designer at Gehry Partners.

Her view of American domesticity is shaped by the places she’s called home: the breezy dog-trots of her native Oklahoma, the shotgun houses of New Orleans, the working-class craftsmans of Berkeley, the saltboxes of coastal New England, and the bungalow courts and ranch houses of Southern California.

With a background in painting and a general skepticism of contemporary architecture’s obsession with cleanliness and erasure, she approaches design as a craftsperson, deeply mindful of material, interested in things forgotten or misconceived, caring of our environment’s future, and focused on the technical.

Guided by a sensitivity for the domestic, she finds value in the things that show signs of life: curtains, lamps, floral arrangements—the everyday elements that bring warmth to a space. Brooke began her career in the experimental studios of Frank Gehry and most recently served as an Associate at Johnston Marklee, where she managed projects for museums, galleries, and artists. She’s equally comfortable in the rigor of the academy and the improvisation of LA and finds meaning in the conversation between the two.

Brooke has taught architectural studios at USC and U.C. Berkeley and has an undergraduate degree in Studio Art from Brown University and a Master of Architecture from the College of Environmental Design at U.C. Berkeley.

Brooke is a licensed Architect in the state of California.
